Prof. Dr Manfred Helmus
Professor Manfred Helmus studied civil engineering in Dortmund and Stuttgart and received his doctorate in 1989 while working at the TU Darmstadt. He gained practical experience both in construction management and in the management of a medium-sized company.
Since 1992 he has been full Professor of Construction Management at the University of Wuppertal and since 2003 full Professor of Construction Management and Construction Economics at the University of Wuppertal.
Prof. Helmus has set himself the goal of identifying and analysing current problems in the German construction industry within his teaching and research field of construction operations and the construction industry and of developing practical and scientifically sound solutions based on this through integrative cooperation with small and medium-sized construction companies.
In addition to his professional activities at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Prof. Helmus is chairman of the Association of Safety and Health Coordinators of Germany V.S.G.K. e. V. and until 2017 of the working group Construction Management of the Schmalenbachgesellschaft as well as head of the AHO Expert Commission Construction Site Ordinance. In addition to these activities, Prof. Helmus cooperates with various associations, institutes and societies, such as the Business Management Institute of the Construction Industry NRW in the design and implementation of seminar events, the Construction Industry Associations NRW and the Wirtschaftsvereinigung Bauindustrie e.V. (Construction Industry Economic Association).
Since its initiation in 2004, he has headed the dual master course of studies in civil engineering at BU Wuppertal in cooperation with the associations of the construction industry and, since 2007, also together with the Deutsche Bahn Netz AG.
Since 2006 he has been a founding member and managing director of the Interdisciplinary Centre III for the Management of Technical Processes at BU Wuppertal and also heads the part-time further education courses REM & CPM (Real Estate Management and Construction Project Management) and MBE Baubetrieb for managers in the construction industry.
Since 2008, he has also headed a research cluster within the framework of the "Future Construction" research initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety, which focuses on recording, monitoring, controlling and documenting processes using RFID technology. Manfred Helmus was awarded the Konrad Zuse Medal for this research activity in 2012. The Zentralverband des Deutschen Baugewerbes (ZDB) honours personalities who have achieved outstanding and promising achievements in information technology in the construction industry. In his function as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of LIST AG, he advises the company on strategic and operational issues.
He is a member of the BIM working group of the Reform Commission "Major Construction Projects" of the Federal Ministry of Building, which deals with model-based planning and construction. Within the framework of research projects, he investigates how learning and work processes must be designed in order to provide employees with qualitative training and further training and to promote their health, motivation and loyalty to their company.Prof. Helmus is married and father of 3 children.
